Preparing images for digital projection
All PDI images, including monochrome images, should be in submitted as 8-bit jpegs in RGB colour mode and the sRGB colour space. The CACC and PAGB now specify PDI images to be a maximum of 1600 pixels high by 1200 pixels high (UXGA). If required, images can be downsized for projection without loss of picture quality. File naming requirements are those necessary for our CCComp competition software - see item 5. below.
The following procedure applies to Photoshop CC. Other image editing software will have similar functionality.
1. Edit image in your editing programme and crop as desired. Do not resize yet, but “Save As” in an appropriate file for your masters, using a lossless format such as PSD or TIFF.
2. Convert the image colour space to sRGB (if not already in that colour space)
With the image open in Photoshop CC, choose Edit > Convert to profile
In Convert to Profile dialog box select as follows:-
Destination Space ........................ sRGB IEC61966-2.1
Engine ........................................... Adobe (ACE)
Intent ............................................ Perceptual
Ensure that Black Point Compensation is ticked
Ensure Flatten Image is ticked to flatten layers and eliminate channel masks
3. Adjust Image Size in Pixels
Choose Image > Image Size
In Image Size dialog box select as follows:-
Check that Width and Height are linked to constrain aspect ratio and tick Resample Image. Enter 1600 as pixel width. If this results in pixel height becoming more than 1200 then change it to 1200, and the width will reduce in proportion. At the bottom of the dialog box, select method for resampling image. Automatic will optimally sharpen or soften the image.
4. Check Image Mode.
Choose Image > Mode and ensure settings are RGB color and 8bits/channel
5. Save and Name File in JPEG format (File naming specific to CCCcomp)
Choose File > Save As
Choose or create a Save In folder for your competition images. (name it for the competition)
Choose Format: JPEG (*.JPEG,*.JPEG,*.JPE) from the drop-down list.
Enter a File name using the following convention:
"Your Name” - “Entry Class” - “Image Title”
where "Entry Class" is Set or Open
For example John Smith - Set - Vine Lines
NB. There must be a space on either side of the hyphens.
Click on the Save button and the JPEG dialog box will appear. Set Quality to a value of 10-12. (File size and estimated upload time are indicated at the bottom of the box.) Click OK to save the Image file. Save all images for same comp. in same folder.
6. Submit entries
Entries should be received by the PDI competition co-ordinator by the cut-off date, as advised. Images may be emailed or submitted on digital media by prior arrangement.
Whatever the method of transmission, please ensure that it is clearly marked with your name and the name or date of the competition.
